A flatbed or step deck may work for a compact excavator that remains within the trailer's capacity and acceptable loaded dimensions. These options can be efficient when suitable ramps, a loading dock, or other loading equipment is available at both ends. They are not automatically the best choice simply because the machine is small. The loading angle and final transport height still need to be checked.
Lowboy, Removable Gooseneck, and Double-Drop Trailers
Tracked machines are often paired with a low-deck trailer that supports ground-level loading and keeps the loaded height as low as practical. A removable gooseneck can allow the excavator to drive onto the trailer from the front. Double-drop transport may be appropriate when deck height is a major constraint or when the machine's dimensions call for a specialized configuration.
The final equipment choice is confirmed only after reviewing the exact machine specifications and pickup and delivery conditions. Using a model name alone is not enough because attachments, aftermarket components, track options, and counterweight packages can change the transport profile.
Preparing an Excavator for Transport
Good preparation reduces loading delays and prevents last-minute changes to the trailer or permit plan. Before pickup, the shipper should confirm the manufacturer's transport instructions and prepare the machine for the agreed configuration.
These are shipper preparation steps, not a substitute for the carrier's final loading and cargo-securement procedures. The selected carrier and driver must inspect and secure the excavator, attachments, and loose components in accordance with applicable cargo-securement requirements and the manufacturer's approved attachment points.
- Remove dirt, rocks, and loose debris from the tracks, undercarriage, bucket, and upper structure.
- Record the machine's condition with clear, dated photos from multiple angles.
- Confirm fluid leaks, warning lights, battery condition, and whether the machine starts, steers, and brakes normally.
- Lower and position the boom, arm, blade, and bucket as agreed with the carrier. Secure doors, panels, mirrors, antennas, and loose cab contents before pickup. Final transport securement must be completed or verified by the carrier.
- Identify every attachment and confirm whether it will remain installed or travel separately.
- Provide the operator's manual or transport instructions when special procedures apply.
- Make sure loading and unloading areas are firm, level, accessible, and clear of overhead or turning obstructions.
